چکیده

New tools from Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) mid-infrared spectroscopy have recently become available to determine the power sources of dust-obscured ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). We compare ISO classiications { starburst or active galactic nucleus (AGN) { with classiications from optical spectroscopy, and with optical/near-infrared searches for hidden broad-line regions. The agreement between mid-infrared and optical classiication is excellent if optical LINER spectra are assigned to the starburst group. The starburst nature of ULIRG LINERs strongly supports the suggestion that LINER spectra in infrared-selected galaxies, rather than being an expression of the AGN phenomenon, are due to shocks that are probably related to galactic superwinds. Diierences between ISO and optical classiication provide clues on the evolution of ULIRGs and on the connguration of obscuring dust. We nd few ISO AGN with optical H II or LINER identiication, suggesting that highly obscured AGN exist but are not typical for the ULIRG phenomenon in general. Rather, our results indicate that strong AGN activity, once triggered, quickly breaks the obscuring screen at least in certain directions, thus becoming detectable over a wide wavelength range.

The Pedigrees of DOGs (Dust-Obscured Galaxies)

A simple mid-infrared to optical color criterion of R − [24] ≥ 14 results in a robust selection of approximately half of the z ∼ 2 ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) population. These ‘Dust-Obscured Galaxies’, or DOGs, have various properties that suggest that they are good candidates for systems in a transition phase between gas-rich mergers and QSOs.

Spitzer Mid-Infrared Imaging of Nearby Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies

We have observed 14 nearby (z < 0.16) Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) with Spitzer at 3.6—24μm. The underlying host galaxies are well-detected, in addition to the luminous nuclear cores. While the spatial resolution of Spitzer is poor, the great sensitivity of the data reveals the underlying galaxy merger remnant, and provides the first look at off-nuclear mid-infrared activity.

and – 2 – ABSTRACT Observations of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with an achieved resolution approaching the diffraction limit in the mid-infrared from 8-25 µm using the Keck Telescopes are reported. We find extremely compact structures, with spatial scales of < 0.3 ′′ (diameter) in six of the seven ULIRGs observed. These compact sources emit between 30% and 100% of the mid-infrared ...
